EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team was narrowly defeated by Ohio Valley Conference foe SIUE, 2-1, on Friday night at Korte Stadium.
The loss drops EKU to 2-8-1 (1-1-0 OVC) on the year. SIUE, meanwhile, improves to 7-2-3 (1-1-1 OVC).
The first half of play was a defensive battle; however, nine minutes into the second 45 minutes of regulation, SIUE's leading scorer, Kayla Delgado, finally got the Cougars on the board, beating her defender and finishing from six yards out to make it 1-0.
In the 78th minute, Alexandra Johnson scored an insurance goal, rebounding a shot by Christine Martinez and finishing from two yards out to make it a two-score game.
EKU attempted a furious rally in the final 10 minutes of play, as freshman
Cassie Smith buried a shot from 30 yards out to make it 2-1 in the 88th minute. But that was the only offense the Colonels could muster, and the host Cougars held on for the victory.
Smith's goal was her second in the last six days. She now leads EKU with six points on the season.
Senior
Brittany Nomady led the Colonels with two shots in the game, one of which was on goal.
Delgado and Sarah Doggendorf paced the SIUE attack with three shots apiece.
Sophomore
