MURRAY, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team took a pair of games from host Murray State Saturday afternoon, defeating the Racers 5-4 in game one and 12-8 in eight innings in the second contest. The Colonels (21-14, 8-4 OVC) hit six home runs spanning the doubleheader.

Eastern quickly jumped on top of Murray State (12-20, 5-6) in the opener. The Colonels totaled four runs after their first two at-bats, thanks in large part to freshman Sarah Fobbs’ two-run blast in the first inning.

The Racers rallied with four straight runs of their own, capped by Casey Castile’s solo home run in the third to level the score at four.

Sophomore pitcher Leanna Pittsenbarger (13-7), who came on in relief in the bottom of the second, shut down Murray State the rest of the way. She allowed just one hit in the final four innings to tally her 13th win.

Redshirt freshman Haley Schenasi scored the winning run in the seventh inning. Schenasi led off the frame with a single and would later score an unearned run. Murray State was charged with five errors in the opener.

Eastern trailed by as many as five runs in the second game before storming back to win in extra innings. The 12 runs scored equaled a season high for the Colonels.

EKU entered the seventh inning behind by three runs, 7-4. That changed in a matter of seconds following back-to-back-to-back home runs by senior Raquel Howes, Fobbs and sophomore Katie Tackett. Those three long balls gave Eastern its first lead of the game, 8-7.

However, Murray State did not go down quietly. The Racers took advantage of a passed ball and wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to plate the tying run.

In the eighth, the Colonels put an exclamation point on the comeback with two-run homers from junior Christina Ciolek and Fobbs. Freshman pitcher Hayley Flynn (2-0) retired Murray State in order in the bottom of the inning to pick up her second win of 2013.

Fobbs and Howes were the offensive stars for Eastern. In the two games, Fobbs batted .571 with three home runs, a double and five RBIs. Howes went 7-for-9 (.778) at the plate which produced one homer, two doubles and five RBIs.

Eastern Kentucky concludes its weekend road trip with a doubleheader at Austin Peay on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
