Colonels Fall At SIU Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. –
A late 14-2 run doomed Eastern Kentucky in an 85-79 loss at Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Saturday.

The Colonels (10-5, 1-1 OVC) led 62-60 after two free throws by Orlando Williams with 9:27 left in the game. The Cougars (4-11, 1-1 OVC) then scored 14 of the next 16 points. Eight straight points by Tim Johnson and a free throw from Michael Messer capped the run and gave the home squad a 74-64 lead with 4:42 left to play.

Eastern was behind by 11, 79-68, after a three-pointer by Kris Davis with 2:33 on the clock. However, the Colonels didn't fold, using an 11-2 run over the next 1:33 to draw within two. Glenn Cosey started it with a three-pointer and Williams finished it off with a three to draw the visitors to within 81-79 with a minute left.

SIUE answered with a lay-up at the other end. On the next EKU possession, Corey Walden got an open three-point attempt that would have cut the Cougar lead to one, but the shot missed.

Cosey led all players with 23 points. Walden finished with 19 and Williams had 18 points. Donivine Stewart led SIU Edwardsville with 15 points.

EKU shot 52 percent from the field but went 5-for-17 (29.4 percent) from behind the arc. SIUE made 58 percent of its shots and 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from deep. The Cougars had seven more turnovers but out-rebounded Eastern by 11.

The Colonels will return home to face Murray State University on Wednesday. It will be the Racers' first visit to McBrayer Arena since Dec. 2, 2010. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Entering this game, four of SIU Edwardsville's 10 losses were by five points or less.

EKU entered the game second in the nation in steals (145) and fourth with 10.4 per game. The Colonels had only seven against SIUE.

The Colonels entered the game ranked second in the nation with 139 three-pointers. EKU made just five treys at SIU Edwardsville on Saturday.

Eastern Kentucky entered the game with the third best turnover margin in the nation (+7.3). Eastern Kentucky committed seven fewer turnovers than SIU Edwardsville.

In their three previous games, the Colonels made 40 three-pointers, shooting 49.4 percent (40-for-81) from behind the arc. EKU finished 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from long range against Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

With 42 points in the first half, EKU ran its streak to seven straight halves scoring 40 or more points.

The series between the two teams is now tied, 3-3. EKU is 1-2 in games played in Edwardsville.
