RICHMOND, Ky. – Approximately 1,500 Colonel fans packed Alumni Coliseum on Tuesday night to get their first glimpses of the men's and women's basketball teams at EKU's 2014 Basketball Hoopfest, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings.
The event, which is free to public, also gave many Colonel basketball fans their first look at McBrayer Arena's new court.
Two students came away as big winners. One won the $300 Barnes & Noble at EKU Bookstore Shootout. Another student took home a $100 gift card after winning the Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin' Challenge.
After both teams were introduced to the floor, senior Meredith Polson and sophomore Jaylen Babb-Harrison won the three-point contest over the teams of sophomore Nicole Bowers and freshman Daniel Norl, and sophomores Alexis Cooper and Isaac McGlone.
With 76 points newcomer JaVontae Hawkins won the slam dunk contest, defeating fellow newcomers Jonathan Hood (72 points) and Ja'Mill Powell (69 points).
Following the dunk contest, fans were invited to the floor to meet the teams and get memorabilia autographed.
The EKU men's team will play an exhibition game on Nov. 7 at home against Urbana at 7 p.m. The women's team has two exhibition games scheduled, the first on Nov. 5 against Pikeville at 7 p.m.
