RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team will head for Wilmington, North Carolina over the holiday break to play in the UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic.
The Colonels will face Western Carolina on Friday at noon and North Florida on Saturday at noon. Both games will be played at Trask Coliseum on the campus of UNCW.
EKU went 1-2 in the Preseason WNIT, losing games to then-No.17 West Virginia and Mercer and defeating Central Arkansas. Sophomore guard
Michaela Hunter averaged 20.5 points-per-game and 9.0 rebounds-per-game vs. Central Arkansas and Mercer and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for her efforts.
Hunter scored 14 points, grabbed six boards and knocked down a pair of free throws wit 10 seconds remaining to lift EKU over UCA, 56-55. A day later she dropped a double-double on Mercer, scoring a career-high 27 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
Hunter currently ranks fourth in the OVC in both scoring (16.3 points-per-game) and rebounding (8.3 rebounds-per-game).
Junior
Shameekia Murray is also off to a hot start for the Colonels, averaging 13.0 points-per-game through EKU's first three games of the season.
Western Carolina (2-2) enters this weekend's tournament fresh off a 67-57 win over Campbell on Monday. The Catamounts are led by Justin Taylor, who is averaging 19.5 points-per-game on the young season.
Eastern is 10-3 all-time versus Western Carolina. The teams last met in an 83-66 EKU victory on Dec. 2, 2006.
North Florida enters the weekend 1-3 following an 81-47 loss at Samford on Monday. Bailey Florin paces the Osprey offense with 13.0 points-per-game.
Saturday's meeting will be the first between EKU and North Florida.
