CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four members of the Eastern Kentucky University track and field team looked to qualify for or solidify their spots in the upcoming NCAA East Regional by competing at the Virginia Challenge this weekend at Lannigan Field.
The 'last-chance' meet was intended to provide athletes the opportunity to improve upon their marks in their respective East and West regions. By moving into the top 48 of the descending order list, an athlete secures a spot at the NCAA Division I Preliminary Rounds on May 29-31, with a chance of advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Sophomore
Cecile Chevillard helped herself the most, running a season-best 10:25.08 in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday night. That time currently ranks 30
th in the NCAA East Region and should put her safely in the regional field.
Freshman Anass Zouhry ran a personal-best 3:46.76 in the men's 1,500 meters on Saturday, which is the fourth-fastest 1,500 meters time in EKU history. However, it currently ranks 69
th in the East and has Zouhry on the outside looking in.
Junior
Ann Eason, meanwhile, ran a 4:26.30 in the women's 1,500 meters, but is already in the top-48 in that event with the 4:22.49 she ran at the Tennessee Relays on April 10 (No. 40).
Sophomore Amos Kosgey posted a 14:52.13 in the men's 5,000 meters on Saturday.
The NCAA East Region Preliminaries will take place in Jacksonville, Fla.
