RICHMOND, Ky.— EKU's women's basketball team used two late runs to seal a 73-58 win over the Davis & Elkins College Senators Wednesday afternoon in McBrayer Arena.
After two
Mariah Massengill free throws capped off an 8-0 Colonel run to end the third quarter, the Senators answered with the first five points of the fourth quarter. Moments later, a layup by
Michaela Hunter sparked a 14-to-3 run over the next 4:18 to turn a seven-point EKU lead into an 18-point margin.
Shameekia Murray led the Colonels (6-5) in scoring with 16 points. She also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out six assists in the win.
Jalen O'Bannon was not far behind with 14 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, logging her fourth double-double of the season. Hunter notched her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, as five Colonels scored in double digits.
Eastern shot just 37.5 percent for the game, but managed to dish out 19 assists on its 30 made field goals. The Colonels also scored 46 points in the paint and converted 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
EKU held the Senators to just 33 percent from the field for the game. The Colonels forced the Senators into 17 turnovers—eight of which were steals—scoring 18 points off of them.
Eastern found itself down 12-5 early in the first quarter when
Miranda Maples went on an 8-0 run of her own to give EKU its first lead of the game.
A jumper with 2:30 to play in the second quarter by Murray gave EKU a 29-28 lead. Eastern would never trail the rest of the way.
The Colonels open Ohio Valley Conference play against Austin Peay State University on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
