MARTIN, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team's offense exploded in a 4-2 victory at Ohio Valley Conference foe UT Martin on Friday night at Skyhawk Field.
After going scoreless in two road defeats last week, EKU (9-4-0, 4-2-0 OVC) found its rhythm up front against UTM. The Colonels matched a season high with 12 shots on goal in the victory.
Eastern has now won nine of its last 11 games. With four games left in the regular season, the Colonels are now one win shy of tying the program record for wins in a season (10).
The Skyhawks (4-11-0, 1-6-0 OVC) jumped out to an early lead when Saphyra James-Coombs scored in the third minute of the game. However, the Colonels responded in the 17
th minute when junior
Jordan Foster headed in a pass from freshman
Marian Wolski and tied it with her team-leading fifth goal of the fall. It was Wolski's first career assist.
Senior
Cassie Smith – EKU's all-time leading scorer – put the Colonels up in the 29
th minute when she scored off a penalty kick. It was the 19
th goal of her record-breaking career.
In the second half, Smith's fellow senior,
Mikayla Brillon, got in on the action, scoring an insurance goal off another penalty kick in the 61
st minute.
UT Martin made it a game in the 78
th minute when Danae Kaldaridou scored off an assist from Amy McGivern to pull the Skyhawks back to within one; however, Foster put the game away in the 87
th minute with her second score of the game, this one off an assist from Brillon.
"Tonight was a hard, physical game," head coach
Nick Flohre said. "We started poorly and it cost us. We were fortunate to respond well against a young, talented team. This game taught us multiple lessons that we have to make better if we want to finish the regular season well."
Foster led all players in the game with five shots, four of which were on goal. Sophomore
Tara Claus fired three shots in the win.
Sophomores
Kacy Eckley and
Haley Kemper played all 90 minutes on EKU's backline, while junior goalkeeper
Anna Hall made seven saves to help preserve the victory.
The Colonels return to action on Sunday at Southeast Missouri. First touch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
