Late Goal Dooms Colonels in Loss at Austin Peay

Box Score (PDF)

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.
– A goal with less than two minutes to play in regulation doomed the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team, as the Colonels fell to host Austin Peay, 1-0, on Thursday night at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

The loss snapped EKU's eight-game winning streak. It was the third longest winning streak in the country, behind only South Carolina (11) and Southern California (nine).

It also snapped the Colonels' streak of five consecutive shutouts. EKU had not surrendered a goal in over a month (a 3-2 win at Charleston Southern on September 4), a streak that spanned 549 minutes of game action.

The deciding goal originated off a corner kick in the 88th minute. The ball bounced beyond the 18-yard box, where APSU's Pamela Penaloza corralled it, took a couple of touches and fired a strike into the upper-left corner of the net.

"We have to give APSU credit for playing until the end," head coach Nick Flohre said. "Unfortunately for us, they made the right opportunity count. We have some tough games ahead of us and need to learn how to raise our game to a higher level. Sunday's going to be another tough challenge against a good Murray State team."

The Colonels (8-3-0, 3-1-0 OVC) played a statistically even match with the host Govs. APSU narrowly edged Eastern in shots, 11-10, and shots on goal, 5-4.

Junior Jordan Foster led EKU with four shots, putting two of those shots on frame. Sophomore Tara Claus and freshman Kayla Childs each put a shot on frame, as well.

Junior goalkeeper Anna Hall made four saves in net for the Colonels.

Sophomore center backs Kacy Eckley and Haley Kemper played all 90 minutes for the stingy Colonel defense. Senior forward Cassie Smith also went the distance up front for Eastern.

EKU will look to bounce back with a match at Murray State on Sunday. First touch is set for 3:00 p.m.
