Colonels Sign Kentucky Prep Star Peyton Broughton

RICHMOND, Ky. – Peyton Broughton, a 6-5 guard/wing out of North Laurel High School in London, Kentucky, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Eastern Kentucky University, head coach Dan McHale announced on Wednesday.

Broughton enters his senior season at North Laurel as a candidate for Kentucky's Mr. Basketball award. He was named second team all-state by the Herald-Leader and Courier-Journal after averaging 23.6 points-per-game as a junior.

"Peyton Broughton is a difference-maker and a huge get for the Colonels," McHale said. "I have said from day one that I wanted to keep the best players in Kentucky home, and that's what we did. Peyton will have an immediate impact and will be a tremendous ambassador of EKU. He has the size, strength and athleticism to be a matchup nightmare in the OVC. He will go down as one of the best scorers in Kentucky high school basketball history, and we can't wait for him to fly around in McBrayer Arena."

Broughton is a five-year starter at North Laurel, and he is already the Jaguars' all-time leading scorer with 2,156 career points.

He has been named first team All-13th Region three consecutive seasons (2014-16).

Broughton joins guards Dedric Boyd (Brownsville, Tennessee) and A.J. Youngman (Peoria, Illinois) in EKU's 2017 signing class.

"All three young men are huge parts of my Colonel Culture, and we excited for EKU and the city of Richmond to watch them grow," McHale added.

McHale and the Colonels play at Auburn on Thursday night at 9:00 p.m.
