Box Score (PDF)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –
The EKU women's basketball team came away with 10 steals and seven blocks, but a late second quarter run gave Western Michigan University the momentum as the Broncos came away with a 74-59 win on Saturday at the Plaza Lights Classic hosted by the University of Missouri Kansas City.

Three different Colonels recorded blocks as EKU's seven blocks were the most blocks in a game for the Colonels since a 62-51 win over Murray State on March 6, 2013 in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.  Its 10 steals marked the third time this season EKU has recorded 10 or more steals in a game.

Senior Jalen O'Bannon added four blocks, tying a career high. Meanwhile, junior transfer Madison Wood logged two blocks while senior Mariah Massengill recorded her first block of her career. Wood notched two blocks in her first career start for the Colonels in EKU's win over Morgan State on Friday.

Senior Shavontae Naylor led the Colonels with 13 points and six rebounds. O'Bannon turned in her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 boards.

The Colonels pulled down 41 rebounds—their second highest total of the season—in Saturday's loss. EKU grabbed 43 rebounds in Friday's 66-58 win over Morgan State University.

A 6- 0 Western Michigan run to close the first half gave the Broncos momentum into the second half on their way to the win.

Freshman Tae'Lour Richardson knocked down two free throws with 3:11 left in the opening half to put the Colonels back in front, 28-27.

However, the Broncos converted on five of their final six possessions of the half to gain a 35-29 lead at the break.

WMU struck first in the second half, but a three-pointer from senior guard Alexus Cooper narrowed the Bronco lead back to five. A long ball from Meredith Shipman widened the WMU to 11 in the third, but the Colonels kept the margin within reach.

Massengill connected from behind-the-arc to trim the lead back to seven, but WMU held the Colonels scoreless in the final 3:29 of the third to build its lead back to 12.

In the fourth, Massengill's steal and bucket cut the lead to eight, but that would be the closest EKU got the remainder of the contest.

O'Bannon and Cooper were named to the all-tournament team.

The Colonels return to McBrayer Arena on Wednesday as they host Western Kentucky University. Wednesday's game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. ET tip as part of a men's and women's doubleheader.
