RICHMOND, Ky. – Despite three Colonels finishing in double-digits, the EKU women's basketball team was upended by Western Kentucky University Wednesday night at McBrayer Arena.
Redshirt senior
Alexus Cooper netted back-to-back baskets to give the Colonels an early 4-2 lead. Minutes later, a steal from senior
Jalen O'Bannon led to a three-ball from fellow senior
Amadi Brooks from the corner and broke the 4-4 tie and put the Colonels up three.
The EKU defense forced four WKU turnovers in the opening period, before a late 6-0 Hilltopper run. With a 20-16 lead, WKU's Ivy Brown drained a field goal with 1:07 left in the opening quarter which continued into the second half as the Lady Tops built their largest lead of the game and never surrendered the lead.
EKU cut the deficit to seven, before a pair of free throws from Kendall Noble and a duo of shots from Dee Givens seemingly kept the Colonels at bay.
Senior
Shavontae Naylor, Cooper, and O'Bannon all scored in double figures for the Colonels. Naylor posted a game-high 20 points, as Cooper finished a single point shy of a new career high.
The Colonels return to action on Dec. 3 at Saint Louis University. Tip is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET.
