Colonels Crush Ohio Valley Behind Cooper's Career Day

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, Eastern Kentucky scored the next 25 points on its way to an 88-30 victory over visiting Ohio Valley University on Sunday.

EKU got its points easily during the run, scoring 17 of the 25 off lay-ups (10) and free throws (7).  Alexus Cooper increased the level of difficulty by stepping out behind the arc to cap the run with back-to-back three-pointers, one from the left corner and another from the right wing.  Her second trey made it 25-2 with 1:24 left in the first quarter.

After making the first basket of the game at the 9:37 mark, Ohio Valley didn't score again until Jayln Gilbert hit the second of two free throw attempts with 27 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.  Amadi Brooks finished off the first 10 minutes of play with a jumper for the Colonels to make it 27-3.

The Fighting Scots went 1-for-8 from the field and turned the ball over 10 times in the first quarter.  Eastern Kentucky converted those turnovers into 13 points while shooting 47 percent from the field (9-for-19).

The Colonels scored eight of the first 10 points of the second quarter to stretch their lead to 30 points, 35-5, for the first time.  Eastern led by 33, 45-12, at halftime after shooting 52 percent from the field.  OVU went 2-for-18 in the first half, but made 8-of-12 at the free throw line.

EKU stretched the margin to 40 for the first time on a lay-up by Jalen O'Bannon with 3:03 left in the third quarter.  The Colonels opened the fourth quarter with a 19-1 run.  Katie Pippen's three-pointer made it a 50-point lead, 78-28, with 6:03 left in the game.

One day after tying her career-best with 19 points against Akron, Cooper led all players with a career-high 22 points.  She went 9-for-12 from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the three-point line.  The senior also contributed four rebounds, two assists, and a steal in Sunday's win.

O'Bannon finished with 10 points and six rebounds to go along with three steals.  Brooks scored a career-high 11 points.  Shavontae Naylor totaled 10 points and five assists.

Eastern Kentucky shot 53 percent from the field for the game, making 9-of-16 three-point attempts.  It was a struggle for the Fighting Scots to make shots, finishing 6-for-40 from the field for 15 percent.  OVU was 0-for-9 from deep but made 18-of-26 at the free throw line.

Ohio Valley turned the ball over 30 times and the Colonels turned those into 39 points.  Eastern held a 38-6 advantage in points in the paint.

EKU will have a week off from game action during finals week.  The Colonels will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 19 at the three-day, three-game Wright State Invitational presented by Holiday Inn.  Eastern will open with Wright State and then face Miami (Ohio) and IPFW.
