Box Score
RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior
Mandy Alvarez became the first Colonel to hit for the cycle in nearly four years on Wednesday as the Eastern Kentucky baseball team fell to East Tennessee State, 17-8, at Turkey Hughes Field.
Alvarez collected the cycle in order, hitting a single in the first, a double in the third, a triple in the fifth and a two-run home run in his final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth.
The native of Miami, Florida is the first Colonel to hit for the cycle since Richie Rodriguez – another Miami native – did it against UT Martin on May 5, 2012.
Alvarez is now batting a team-best .377 on the year with nine home runs, 39 RBI and 32 runs scored.
EKU (17-21) jumped out to an early lead in the game, as Alvarez started the scoring by pushing across junior
Cole Warrenfeltz with an RBI double to left center in the bottom of the third. Junior
Taylor Blair ended the scoring in the inning with a two-run home run to left, plating Alvarez and making it 3-0.
ETSU (16-20) got two runs back in the top of the fourth and then exploded for 13 runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding lead.
The Colonels tried to claw back beginning in the home half of the fifth, as junior
Shea Sullivan connected on a one-out home run to left. Alvarez followed up that with a triple to center, and then scored on a base hit to left by fellow senior
Kyle Nowlin.
Eastern plated another in the bottom of the seventh, as Blair struck again, this time with an RBI single to left that scored Sullivan and made it 15-6.
Alvarez capped the Colonel scoring with a two-run shot to left that scored Sullivan in the bottom of the ninth; but it was too little, too late, as the Buccaneers held on for the win.
Alvarez finished the day 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Sullivan went 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Blair chipped in two hits and drove in three runs.
Trey York paced ETSU offensively, going 3-for-6 with seven RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Lefty
