MUNCIE, Ind. – Junior
Jordan Foster netted the Colonels' first goal of 2016 in the 69
th minute, but it was not enough, as the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team dropped its season opener at Ball State, 3-1, on Friday evening at a rain-soaked Briner Sports Complex.
Â
Ball State, the defending Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular season champion, jumped out to a lead when Emily Scott darted through the Colonel defense and scored from the left side in the 24
th minute.Â
Â
The Eastern backline held tight the rest of the half, and the Colonels went into the break down by only one.
Â
The Cardinals, however, extended their lead with a goal in the 56
th minute on a free kick by Lorina White.
Â
In the 58
th minute, Foster – EKU's leader in shots attempted last season – came on for the Colonels, and in the 69
th minute, she put one in the left corner of the net, cutting the Eastern deficit in half, 2-1.
Â
EKU's
Tara Claus and
Marian Wolski both attempted equalizing shots over the next 10 minutes, but neither could convert. Ball State then added an insurance goal in the 81
st minute to seal the win.
Â
"We lost to a team who is a defending conference champion and knows how to win, while we're still figuring things out," head coach
Nick Flohre said. "We're going to have to continue working through some mental barriers in order to get there, but I think the team's desire to be successful will help us continue to get better."
Â
Claus led Eastern with three shots on the night.
Â
Wolski and defenders
Haley Kemper and
Kacy Eckley all went the distance for the Colonels.
Â
Junior
Anna Hall played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves in the game.
Â
"We saw some good individual performances in the game and got some good minutes from players coming off the bench," Flohre added.
Â
EKU will host Xavier in its home opener on Sunday. First touch is set for 1:00 p.m.
Â
"We're going to have to have a short memory because of the tough game against Xavier," Flohre said. "They'll be another good test. If we can make our play more consistent, I think we'll have a good chance on Sunday."
