EKU Soccer Drops Home Opener to Xavier

Box Score (PDF)

RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team dropped its home opener to Xavier, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.

Statistically, the Colonels and Musketeers played a very even match. Both teams attempted 14 shots on the day. EKU took nine corner kicks to Xavier's one.

However, it was the visiting Musketeers that capitalized on their opportunities. Following a couple of early shots on frame by EKU's Makenna Sullivan and Tara Claus, XU took the lead in the 18th minute when Tori Doss punched one in off a cross from Maddie Tierney.

The Eastern backline stood pat, not allowing another goal in the first half. In the 69th minute, though, Courtney Lankford took a cross from Emily Calvani and scored from four yards out to give the Musketeers some breathing room.

Freshman Marian Wolski and junior Emmi Carroll both fired shots in the 79th minute as the Colonels tried to rally, but neither found the back of the net.

Wolski, Carroll, Sullivan, senior Cassie Smith and freshman Erin Torrence all attempted two shots on the day for EKU.

Wolski and Smith never left the field for the Colonels in the loss.

Junior Anna Hall played all 90 minutes in goal for the Colonels and made four saves.

EKU returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Northern Kentucky in Richmond at 5:00 p.m.
