RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team picked up the first win of the
Nick Flohre Era in style, blanking the visiting Northern Kentucky Norse, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.
Â
It was the first win of the season for Eastern, and the first win as a collegiate head coach for Flohre.
Â
"Tonight was a great first win of the season," Flohre said. "We faced a very good NKU team that will cause problems for every opponent they face. Our players should be proud of themselves."
Â
EKU (1-2-0) dominated the match from the first whistle. The Colonels outshot the Norse, 23-7, and attempted seven corner kicks to NKU's one.
Â
The Colonels drew first blood in the 23
rd minute when junior
Emmi Carroll took a pass from fellow junior
Jordan Foster and fired from around 20 yards away, finding the right bottom corner of the net. It was the first goal of the season for Carroll and the first assist of the season for Foster.
Â
Eastern continued to attack in the second half and finally got an insurance goal in the 68
th minute when freshman
Erin Torrence beat the goalkeeper to a rebound and put it in from seven yards out.
Â
Eastern's 23 shots and nine shots on frame were both season highs. Foster led the Colonels with five shots, while Torrence attempted four.
Â
Junior
Anna Hall played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves to earn her first clean sheet of the year.
Â
Sophomores
Kacy Eckley and
Haley Kemper also went the distance on the backline in the shutout victory.
Â
"The players are buying into what the coaching staff has been asking of them and are cleaning up the little details we've been struggling with the past couple weeks," Flohre added. "They're now seeing the rewards of their hard work."
Â
EKU returns to action on the road on Saturday when the Colonels face VMI at 1:00 p.m. That game will be streamed live on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
