RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team blew out in-state rival Morehead State, 4-0, for its program-record eighth consecutive victory on Thursday at EKU Soccer Field.
Â
Senior
Cassie Smith highlighted the win by scoring a pair of goals to break the EKU career goals record held by Nikki Donnelly (2010-13). Smith now has 18 career scores.
Â
It is EKU's largest margin of victory in an Ohio Valley Conference game since a 5-0 win at Jacksonville State on October 15, 2010.
Â
"We're proud of the players for the work they're putting in to get better," first-year head coach
Nick Flohre said. "They're really coming together as a team and we're seeing great performances on the field because of it."
Â
Smith opened the scoring for the Colonels (8-2-0, 3-0-0 OVC) in the 28
th minute by streaking to the goal and playing a pass from junior
Jordan Foster, drilling the ball into the top right corner of the goal.
Â
Smith broke the record in the 52
nd minute, putting the Colonels up 2-0 on a goal off a beautiful free kick from junior
Emmi Carroll.
Â
Freshman
Kayla Childs added to the scoring when she dribbled around MSU defenders and planted the ball in the back of the net in the 70
th minute. Childs has two goals on the season.
Â
Carroll – not content with only an assist on the day – added to the EKU lead in the 86
th minute, taking a pass from Foster and depositing the ball in the MSU net. Carroll, who is third all-time at EKU in goals, now has three goals and two assists on the season.
Â
"Morehead State is always a tough team who doesn't back down at any point," Flohre added. "We were fortunate to a goal fairly early and then defended well enough to limit their chances."
Â
EKU outshot Morehead State (3-8-1, 0-3-0 OVC), 22-15, on the day. The Colonels put 12 shots on frame. Foster fired six shots to lead Eastern.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Anna Hall continued to stifle the competition with her seventh shutout of the year, which is only one shy of tying the single-season school record held by Stephanie Lynch back in 2008.
Â
Sophomore center backs
Kacy Eckley and
Haley Kemper played all 90 minutes for EKU and continue to lead a Colonel defensive unit that has recorded five consecutive shutouts and has not surrendered a goal in 462 minutes of action.
Â
Eastern will play its next four games on the road, beginning with Austin Peay on October 6 at 8:00 p.m.
Â
"We have to take advantage of the bye weekend to get healthy and to get ready for a tough road trip next weekend," Flohre said.
