KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles highlighted the EKU men's tennis season opener against the University of Tennessee, as the Colonels fell 6-1 Saturday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
"It was a spectacular performance by our No. 1 doubles team," EKU head coach
Rob Oertel said. "Any time you beat a nationally ranked team it's something to be proud of."
Junior
Ramon van Flymen and senior
Sebastian Mueller upended the 26th ranked duo of Jack Schipanski and Luis Valero, 7-5. The win marks the second consecutive year an EKU doubles team has defeated a ranked opponent. Van Flymen has been a part of both. Along with Alex Alvaro, van Flymen took down the 15th ranked duo of the University of Virginia last season while the Cavaliers were the top ranked team in the country after winning their second national championship in three years.
"Ramon being at the NCAAs last year helps in those types of situations," Oertel said. "He's not intimidated by ranked teams, he's been against guys at that level before. It's a big factor and he brings confidence to the court with whoever he's playing with at doubles."
The Colonels travel to nearby Lexington for a match against the 15th ranked University of Kentucky. Monday's match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
