EDWARDSVILE, Ill. – In a rematch of last year's Ohio Valley Conference championship game, the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team used a game-winning header by senior forward
Emmi Carroll to help defeat the SIUE Cougars, 3-2, Sunday afternoon on the road at Glen-Ed Soccer Field.
With the win, EKU (7-3-3-, 4-0-2) remains unbeaten in OVC play and atop the conference standings with 14 points.
The Colonels wasted little time scoring. In the 15th minute, sophomore midfielder
Marian Wolski fired a cross to senior
Jordan Foster that found its way past a SIUE defender. Foster then used a gorgeous left-to-right crossover that gave her the separation she needed to find the bottom right of the net. The Fairborn, Ohio native now holds a tie with Carroll with five goals on the season.
Just three minutes later in the 18th minute, Wolski found junior midfielder
Bailly Bounds uncovered in the box. A pair of SIUE defenders came over to contest, but her shot still found its way past the Cougars' goalkeeper, her third score of the year.
Wolski is now one of only seven Colonels to record two assists in one game. She is tied with Foster for the team lead in assists this season (three).
The Cougars (5-6-1, 3-2 OVC) made the game interesting with a goal in the 57th minute from Kelsey Pruett to make the score 2-1. However, in the 77th minute, freshman defender
Katie Shaffer placed a free kick from midfield in the perfect position for Carroll to go up and head the ball through the net.
The Cougars gave chase at the lead again in the 85th minute, when Peyton Roehnelt scored off a penalty kick to make the score 3-2. However, the Eastern defense locked in and did not allow the Cougars to fire another shot in the remaining five minutes.
"We knew today's game was going to be a battle and played with a lot of emotion," head coach
Nick Flohre said. "Our players started with great energy, both on the field and on the sidelines, and it helped us get the early lead."
Foster led Eastern with three shots, two of those being on goal. In total, EKU had eight shots on the afternoon, compared to just six for SIUE.
Eastern will be back home on Thursday when the Colonels host defending OVC regular season champion Murray State. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
"This has been a good weekend for us," Flohre commented about his team's two road wins this weekend. "The players should be very proud of themselves."?
