HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – With the match tied, freshman Romain Stoffels beat senior Adrian Isache to give the Eastern Kentucky men's tennis team a 4-3 victory over Northern Kentucky on Tuesday.
 
Stoffels won the first set 6-2, but trailed in the second set 5-3 before winning four straight games to take the set and the match.
 
"I'm very proud of the way Romain came through under pressure," EKU Head Coach Rob Oertel said.
 
The Colonels (11-5) earned the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead.  The two teams split the first two doubles matches before the duo of Sebastian Mueller and Jan Kuehling earned a 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.
 
"Since Jan Kuehling joined out team, our doubles play has hopped to a higher level," Oertel said.  "Our top two doubles teams have been fabulous.  It's not easy to win at No. 1 and No. 2 and we've done it a lot this year."
 
After falling at No. 3 singles, Eastern Kentucky picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 4 to climb within a point of winning the match.  Kuehling beat Court Clark, 7-6 and 6-4, at No. 4.  Ramon van Flymen took down Lukas Clemens, 7-5 and 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
 
The Norse (4-3) won at No. 1 and No. 5 singles to tie the match 3-3.
 
Today's match marked the fourth victory this season by a 4-3 score for the Colonels.
 
"The thing I am most proud of this year is the way the guys are grinding out wins," Oertel said.  "This team is really enjoying the pressure of the moment and coming through in tight matches.  That's what it takes to win conference titles, and that is obviously our goal." 
 
Eastern Kentucky will open Ohio Valley Conference play on the road this weekend.  The Colonels play at Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. on Friday and then play a non-conference match at Southern Illinois on Saturday at noon.
