RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University opened the brand new Gertrude Hood Softball Field on Saturday with a doubleheader against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, but the visiting Cougars swept both games.Â

SIUE won game one 11-0 and picked up a 7-5 victory in extra innings in game two.

In game one, the Cougars got all the runs they would need with one swing of the bat in the top of the third inning. Zoe Schafer sent the first pitch she saw over the wall in left center with two runners on base. SIUE added two more in the sixth and four in the seventh inning to pull away.

Schafer finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and three RBIs. Tess Eby was 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs. She hit a three-run home run in the seventh. Haley Chambers-Book went the distance in the circle for SIUE. She limited Eastern to two hits, struck out 13 and did not walk a batter.

Paige Murphy accounted for the Colonels' only two hits.

The Colonels trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning of game two before
Hannah Clark erased the deficit with a two-out, two-run double to left field.Â
Mia Sanchez and
Johnkyria Alston scored on the play.

SIUE scored two runs in the top of the third, including a solo home run by Chambers-Book, to go back in front by one. Eastern answered in the bottom of the fourth. Clark came up big with a two-run home run over the wall in center field.Â
Paige Murphy scored later in the inning on an error to put the home team ahead 5-3.

Schafer's solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh tied the score at 5-5. With two outs and two on in the top of the eighth, Eby scored on a wild pitch. Allison Smiley followed with an RBI infield single.

Clark finished game two with two hits in four at bats, her fifth home run of the season, a run scored and four driven in. Murphy was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Alston had a hit, two walks and two runs for the Colonels (14-21, 3-4 OVC).Â

Smiley was 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs for SIUE (30-7, 6-2 OVC). Chambers-Book scored two runs and picked up the win in game two.

The Colonels will host Eastern Illinois for a doubleheader on Sunday at the new Gertrude Hood Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
