CHARLESTON, Ill. – A pair of Colonels scored their first goals of the season to help lift the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team past host Eastern Illinois, 2-0, at Lakeside Soccer Field.
Â
EKU (6-3-3, 3-0-2 OVC) has now won four straight over EIU (5-7-1, 0-4 OVC) dating back to 2014.
Â
"EIU has frustrated a lot of teams this season with their defensive organization and they defended well against us too," said head coach
Nick Flohre. "We are proud of the girls for sticking to the game plan and being persistent."
Â
Both teams were even throughout the first 55 minutes. However, in the 56th minute, senior forward
Jordan Foster found junior defender
Kacy Eckley sprinting down the left sideline. After the beautiful feed from Foster, Eckley found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and fired a shot to the bottom left of the goal that found its way into the back of the net. The goal gave the Liberty Township, Ohio native her first score of the season and second of her career.
Â
Just 12 minutes later, junior midfielder
Idalys Rea battled her way around three Panther defenders and found senior midfielder
Allison Werner wide open at the top of the box. From there, she fired a shot from 20 yards out that bounced off of the top crossbar and past the goalkeeper. It was Werner's first career goal.
Â
Werner led EKU with three shots on the afternoon, two of which were on target.
Â
The Colonels dominated the match statistically, firing off 15 shots compared to just three for Eastern Illinois. Eight of Eastern's shots were on goal, compared to just one for EIU.
Â
Henar Urteaga led Eastern Illinois with two shots on the day.
Â
Center backs
Haley Kemper and
Katie Shaffer both went the distance on EKU's backline, while senior goalkeeper
Anna Hall made one save to earn her fourth clean sheet of the season.
Â
"Our attacking players were relentless and kept EIU under pressure and our defenders communicated and organized well to end EIU's attacking transition," continued Flohre. "Today was a good start to our road trip."
Â
Eastern will be back in action Sunday when they take on the SIUE Cougars in Edwardsville. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
