Colonels Storm Back to Beat ETSU, 3-1, on the Road

Box Score

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.
– The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team scored three unanswered goals to storm back and beat East Tennessee State, 3-1, on the road on Tuesday evening.

It was EKU's (1-1) first win of the 2018 season.

The Colonels fell in an early hole when ETSU's Eleonora Goldoni scored from eight yards out in the 15th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

EKU finally leveled less than a minute before halftime, as senior Kacy Eckley headed in a corner kick from junior Monica Rios.

The Colonels rode that wave of momentum into the second half. Junior Erin Torrence put Eastern ahead in the 61st minute, burying a shot from 18 yards out to make it 2-1. Sophomore Kylie Thompson earned the assist on the play.

Senior Idalys Rea added an insurance goal in the 85th minute, scoring her first career goal off a lob pass from Torrence.

"We're very proud of the girls and how they kept working throughout the game," head coach Nick Flohre said. "ETSU was very disciplined in their approach and frustrated us with their defensive organization and ability to counter-attack in the first half. The girls showed they can regain their composure, though, and in the second half, we played very well. We're starting to see some exciting moments on the field and, even better, we're starting to see how excited the girls are getting as they gain confidence as a team."

EKU outshot ETSU (0-2), 15-6, on the night. Torrence led all players in the game with four shots, while Rea came off the bench to attempt three.

Eckley and sophomore Katie Shaffer played all 90 minutes on EKU's backline.

Sophomore Billie Clark played the first half in goal for the Colonels, allowing one goal and making two saves. Freshman Zoe Aguirre made her collegiate debut in the second half and held the Bucs scoreless.

EKU returns to action on Friday when the Colonels host Ball State in their home opener at 4 p.m.
