HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Host Marshall scored two second-half goals in a span of less than three minutes to surge past the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team, 2-1, on Friday night at Hoops Family Field.
Following a scoreless first half, senior
Idalys Rea gave the Colonels a short-lived lead when she outran the Marshall midfield to a
Bailly Bounds pass and scored her second goal of the season, making it 1-0 in the 51
st minute.
Less than seven minutes later, Marshall (1-2-1) leveled on a goal from Farah Mar Abu-Tayen.
Less than three minutes after that score, the Thundering Herd went ahead on a goal by Marah Mar Abu-Tayen.
"Tonight was disappointing because I thought we were the better side, especially in the second half," head coach
Nick Flohre said. "We moved the ball well and regained possession quickly. Unfortunately, we gave up a couple counterattacks and paid for them. We're looking at it as a learning opportunity and will get better from this so we prevent these situations in the future."
EKU outshot Marshall, 10-9, on the night. Rea, Bounds, redshirt freshman
Sarah Owusu and sophomore
Kylie Thompson all fired two shots in the game. The Colonels attempted three corner kicks to the Thundering Herd's one.
Defenders
Kacy Eckley and
Katie Shaffer played all 90 minutes on the Colonel backline.
Freshman goalkeeper
Zoe Aguirre made two saves in the loss.
EKU returns to action on Sunday when the Colonels face Kentucky in Lexington at 2 p.m.
