HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Senior
Gladys Cheruiyot and junior
Lilian Jeptoo Kiborus went 1-2 to lead the Eastern Kentucky University women's cross country team to a second-place finish at the season-opening Queen City Invitational on Saturday at NKU's Valhalla Course.
The EKU women finished with 76 points, losing only to Ohio State (68). The Colonels defeated the likes of Xavier (89), Dayton (90), Kentucky (95), Wright State (147), Morehead State (186), Cincinnati (193), host Northern Kentucky (251) and Marshall (335).
Cheruiyot and Kiborus – both key runners on EKU's 2017 NCAA-qualifying team – looked strong for the first race of the season, covering the hilly 5K course in times of 17:45.0 and 17:46.9.
Senior
Meggan Grams – a 2018 NCAA East Region qualifier in the 1,500 meters – finished 11
th out of 149 runners with an 18:18.6. Newcomers Saskia Pingpak (20
th / 18:40.0) and Beighley Ayers (44
th / 19:17.8) rounded out EKU's scoring five on the day.
The EKU men rested nearly all of their top runners, but still got top-15 performances from two Colonels making their collegiate debuts,
Remi Schyns (ninth) and Antoine Senard (11
th). Schyns sat out all of last year with an injury, but covered the 5K course on Saturday morning in a time of 15:35.3. Senard, a freshman, was not far behind in 15:42.8.
Spencer Carman, a freshman from Lexington, was third on the team and 34
th overall in 16:13.5, followed by senior
Greyson Winiger (44
th / 16:22.1) and freshman Jackson Siddall (75
th / 16:37.5).
The EKU men finished ninth out of 15 teams with 157 points.
The cross country teams return to action on Saturday, September 15, at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
