RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team battled visiting Belmont to a 0-0 draw on Friday afternoon.
Early in the game, freshman
Audrey Anderson buried a shot from just outside the box, but the goal was waived off due to a foul call.
The Colonels continued attacking, outshooting the Bruins on the day, 12-8.
Belmont's Julie Garst had a shot at an open goal in the first overtime, but junior defender
Claire Hicks was able to get to the ball and clear it before it crossed the line.
Sophomore
Sarah Owusu led all players in the game with four shots, one of which hit the crossbar. Anderson and senior
Monica Rios both put shots on frame for the Colonels.
"I thought we made Belmont defend a ton tonight," head coach
Matt Cosinuke said. "We controlled the tempo and created chances all night. We made some great individual plays and to have a goal called back in the seventh minute was tough."
Junior center back
Katie Shaffer played all 110 minutes on EKU's backline to help preserve the shutout.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Zoe Aguirre made two saves and earned her second clean sheet of the season.
The Colonels travel to Morehead State on Sunday to take on the rival Eagles at 2 p.m.
"We are excited for Sunday," Cosinuke added. "We keep working, keep fighting and keep getting better. That's all we can ask, as a coaching staff. Never give up."
