EKU Softball Splits A Pair Of Contests Against Austin Peay On Sunday

Game 1 | Game 2

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. –
The Eastern Kentucky University softball team split a pair of contests against Austin Peay State University Sunday in Clarksville.

EKU (28-18, 14-6 OVC) won game one, 3-1, before falling in game two, 11-3.

In game one Eastern used some late inning heroics to knock off the Governors.

Melissa Jacobsen started the spark in the top of the sixth inning for the Colonels.  Jacobsen sent the first hit of the day for the Colonels down the right field line for a triple with one out. Sammi Miller brought her home with a squeeze bunt, which was misplayed by the Governor first baseman, to tie the game at 1-1. With two outs, Hannah Clark put a jolt into a 1-1 pitch and sent it over the left field fence to take a 3-1 lead.

Austin Peay (28-19, 13-5 OVC) scratched first in the top of the second. Morgan Rackel drew a leadoff walk to get the inning started. After Lexi Osowski reached on a fielder's choice to put a runner on first with one out, Kelsey Gross sent a double off the center field wall to take a 1-0 lead.

Sammi Reynoso started in the circle for Eastern and recorded the save after coming back in relief. She threw five and one-third innings allowing one run and striking out one. Murphy McRoberts picked up the win.

Eastern was out-hit 7-2 in the game.

In game two Austin Peay scored in four of the five innings to defeat Eastern 11-3.

In the bottom of the first, the Governors struck first. After a leadoff single by Kacy Acree and walk by Danielle Liermann put runners on first and second with one out. Carly Mattson sent a 2-1 pitch into the left center field gap to take the early, 1-0 lead. Rackel brought home another run after reaching on an error.

Eastern answered back though in the top of the third. After a Miller single got things started, Destinee Lizzmore sent the first pitch of the at bat over the center field fence to tie the game at 2-2. The Colonels were not done. Emily Corbitt singled through the left side and stole second with two outs. That is when Zoe Mihalicz singled down the left field line to take a 3-2 lead.

Austin Peay scored three runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings to end the game.

The Colonels wrap up the regular season portion of their season when they travel to Belmont University on Thursday for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
