Strong Start Not Enough For EKU To Topple Skyhawks

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Despite a strong first quarter, the Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team fell to University of Tennessee at Martin, 65-50, on Thursday night at McBrayer Arena.
 
Bria Bass scored a team-high 11 points for EKU, and I'Liyah Green led the team with eight rebounds.  
 
Eastern Kentucky drops to 8-12 (2-7 OVC), while UT Martin improves to 12-8 (7-1 OVC).
 
The Colonels jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead. UT Martin got on the board, but Bass' lay-up closed out the quarter, putting Eastern up 15-9.
 
Teri Goodlett's steal opened up play for the second quarter. After a single free throw from Eastern's Samari Mowbray, the Skyhawks took over the game.
 
UTM scored 20 unanswered throughout the second quarter.  Demi Burdick kicked-off the run with a jumper, getting the Skyhawks within five. Brittni Moore scored the 20th point, giving the visitors a 29-16 advantage.  Eastern trailed 33-18 at the break.
 
Mowbray opened up the third quarter with a three-pointer. The Colonels used a 7-0 run to close the gap to 41-30. Green's jumper at the 4:09 mark got the Colonels within seven of the lead, 41-34, but a 7-0 run from the Skyhawks extended their advantage to 48-34.
 
The Colonels attempted to rally with a steal from Green to start the fourth quarter, but back-to-back Skyhawk runs closed out the game.
 
Goodlett posted a game-high seven assists and three steals. Mowbray contributed eight points, five rebounds, and one block.
 
Chelsey Perry led all players with 15 points, 11 assists, and three blocks. Dasia Young added 12 points and two steals to the Skyhawks' totals.
 
Eastern shot 36 percent from the field while UT Martin shot 38 percent. The Skyhawks out-scored the Colonels 10-7 in second chance points.
                                                                                                                         
The Colonels remain at home to face Southeast Missouri State Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
