RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior
Katie Shaffer's game-winner on Senior Day propelled the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a 2-1 victory over first-place Southeast Missouri on Saturday.
It was SEMO's (5-1-1) first loss of the season.
The Redhawks took an early lead when Lauren Welker was fouled in the box just five minutes into the game. She converted the ensuing penalty kick to put the visitors on top.
Sophomore
Maddy Lemery tied it up in the 28
th minute, taking a pass from fellow sophomore
Ali Kirk and burying the equalizer. It was her first career goal and Kirk's second career assist.
Shaffer broke through with the game-winner in the 64
th minute. Sophomore
Michaela Iacono was fouled just outside of the box. Senior
Taran McMillan lofted the ensuing free kick, and Shaffer headed it home to give the Colonels a lead they would not relinquish.

Claire Hicks played all 90 minutes on the backline for EKU.
Senior goalkeeper
Billie Clark made six saves to secure the victory, including consecutive ones in the final three minutes of the game.
EKU (3-4-0) outshot SEMO, 16-12, and put seven shots on frame.
Junior
Baylee Lanter led all players in the game with five shots, two of which were on goal.
This was the Colonels' first win over Southeast Missouri since 2016.
EKU stays at home to host Belmont on Tuesday, March 30, at 3:30 p.m.
