BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University senior soccer standout
Katie Shaffer was voted the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday.
Â
Shaffer has now been named OVC Defensive Player of the Week four times in her decorated career, more than any player in EKU history.
Â
The 2019 first-team All-OVC center back never left the field for Colonels in two big wins last week.
Â
She played all 90 minutes of the 2-0 road shutout over Eastern Illinois on Tuesday, helping limit the Panthers to only two shots on frame.
Â
Shaffer then played a key role in handing Southeast Missouri its first loss of the season on Saturday.
Â
On Senior Day at EKU Soccer Field, Shaffer headed in the game-winning goal off a set piece in the 65
th minute to give the Colonels a 2-1 victory over the Redhawks.
Â
The Monroe, Ohio native now has two goals and one assist on the year.
Â
Shaffer anchored a defense that surrendered only one goal in 180 minutes of action over the week. That one goal came on a penalty kick in the fifth minute against SEMO.
Â
The Colonels are set to play their final home game of the season against Belmont on Tuesday, March 30, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
