RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team used a golden goal in the 94th minute by freshman
Gretta Gunn to knock off IUPUI, 4-3, in the season opener.

The Colonels got on the board first in the sixth minute after junior
Maddy Lemery took a pass from
Myla Sharpless and put it in the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

IUPUI's Elizabeth Bueckers took over the rest of the first half after that.
Â
Bueckers tied the contest in the 14th minute finding the back of the net after the assists from Sam Slimak and Maya Lacognato. Bueckers gave the Jaguars the lead for the first time, 2-1, in the match on a penalty kick in the 30th minute.

That score held true until the 49th minute.

Sharpless played a beautiful ball into the box off the corner kick and Kara Hass tied the match at 2-2, on a header.

Bueckers flexed her muscles again for the Jaguars finding the back of the net for the third time in the match in the 73rd minute to give IUPUI a 3-2 lead over the Colonels.

That lead was short lived.

Michaela Iacono played a ball into the box off a corner kick and
Ali Kirk connected with her head to find the net and tie the match at 3-3.

The Colonels out-shot the Jaguars 21-9 on the contest. EKU had seven shots on goal compared to IUPUI's five.

Four different Colonels scored goals. Sharpless had two assists.

The Jaguars finished last year 5-2-2 and 43rd in the RPI.

This is the first time EKU has scored four goals in a regular season contest since 2018. It is the first time the Colonels have opened the season with a win since 2014.

EKU returns to the pitch on Sunday at in-state rival Northern Kentucky. First touch starts at 7 p.m.
