EKU's 1971-72 NCAA Tournament Team To Be Honored In December

RICHMOND, Ky. – The 1971-72 Eastern Kentucky NCAA Tournament team will be honored on Dec. 17 in conjunction with the Colonels' game against Radford.
 
The game against Radford starts at 2 p.m.  The 1971-72 team will be honored during halftime.
 
Coached by Guy Strong, the 1971-72 Colonels finished the season 15-11.  EKU went 9-5 and tied for first in the Ohio Valley Conference before beating Morehead State, 98-86, in a playoff game in Frankfort to earn a bid to the 1972 NCAA Tournament.
 
In the first round of the NCAA Tourney, Eastern Kentucky faced Florida State, who would go on to reach the championship game against UCLA.  The game was played in Knoxville and the Colonels took the Seminoles to the wire before losing 83-81.  With the score tied at 81-81, FSU made two free throws in the final seconds to pull out the win.

Charlie Mitchell led the team in scoring with 22.7 points per game.  George Bryant averaged 21.2 points.  Daryl Dunagan led the team in rebounding with an average of 9.0 boards per contest.  Billy Burton was the team leader with 132 assists
 
This year's team will return to action Friday for three games in three days at the Capital Classic hosted by Georgia State.  EKU opens with GSU on Friday at 6 p.m. ET.  Eastern Kentucky takes on UNC Asheville on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET.  The event concludes for the Colonels on Sunday against Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m. ET.
