2023 Football Early Signing Day

Colonels Add 10 During Early Signing Period

RICHMOND, Ky. – EKU head coach Walt Wells announced the signing of 10 student-athletes who will join the football program for the 2023 season as part of the Early Signing Period on Wednesday.
 
The newcomers consist of three defensive linemen, two linebackers, two quarterbacks, one kicker, one offensive lineman, and one wide receiver. Four of the incoming Colonels hail from Kentucky, while Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia are also represented.

 
Jacob Baker | K/P | 6-2 | 200 | Corbin, Ky./Corbin
  • Ray Guy All-American
  • 4A District 7 Player of the Year as a senior
  • Led Redhounds to state championship game in 2022
  • Three-time all-state selection
  • KHSAA top-ranked kicker in 2021
  • Ranks seventh in KHSAA history in field goals made
Wells on Baker: "Jacob is a unique athlete. He's both a kicker and a punter, but was also the region player of the year for Corbin, where he played for a state championship. He'll be kicking and punting for us here at EKU."

 
Dayshawn Coleman | NG | 6-2 | 300 | Lorton, Va./Monroe College
  • Tallied 3.0 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks for Monroe College in 2022
  • Part of 2021 team that completed undefeated regular season
  • Played offensive line at South County H.S.
Wells on Coleman: "Dayshawn is a kid we started recruiting last year as a nose guard. He had a great two-year career at Monroe College. He's a big, athletic young man who fills a hole we need in replacing Shane Burks."
 

Simon Ghee | FE | 6-3 | 240 | Bowling Green, Ky./Warren East
  • 2022 Kentucky Football Coaches Association 4A District Two Player of the Year
  • All-SKY Conference First Team Defense selection as a senior
  • All-SKY Conference Second Team Defense performer as a junior
  • Led the Raiders to the 4A state quarterfinals in 2022
  • Also played tight end
  • Competed on Warren East's track and field team
Wells on Ghee: "Simon is a field end who is extremely athletic. He had a great season at Warren East High School and helped lead them to an undefeated regular season. He has the potential to continue to grow into a boundary end."
 

Jaycob Horn | WR | 6-0 | 204 | Tupelo, Miss./Northwest Mississippi CC
  • Played in 11 games during the Rangers' run to the MACCC title game and the NJCAA semifinals in 2022
  • Three-star recruit out of Tupelo H.S. 
  • Totaled 1,253 all-purpose yards as a senior for the Golden Waves
  • Son of New Orleans Saints wide receiver Joe Horn and brother of Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn
Wells on Horn: "Jaycob comes from a tremendous football family. He has good size, strength, and speed. He can make all the catches and played really well for Northwest Mississippi in their semifinal run. We're looking for him to come in and make an immediate impact. "

  • Led Tigers to LHSAA State Football Prep Classic Division III state championship game
  • Frank Fontana Award winner in 2021
  • Guided St. James Academy to Class 4A state title as a junior
  • Threw for 2,856 yards with 25 touchdowns in 2020
  • Son of LSU defensive coordinator Matt House
Wells on House: "Jackson is a proven winner, playing in three state championships in two different states and winning two of them. He's a smart, athletic quarterback who can really throw the football."
 

Colbey Lamberth | QB | 6-3 | 211 | Dickson, Tenn./Dickson County
  • Three-star prospect according to 247Sports and Rivals
  • TSSAA All-Region 6-6A selection
  • DGA Battle of the States QB MVP
  • No. 9-ranked quarterback in the state of Tennessee
Wells on Lamberth: "Colbey is a big, athletic quarterback. He has tremendous arm talent and athletic ability."


Jakobe McLaurin | OL | 6-2 | 315 | Clinton, Miss./Northwest Mississippi CC
  • Helped lead the Rangers to a MACCC title game appearance and the NJCAA semifinals in 2022
  • Part of MACCC championship team that made the NJCAA semifinals in 2021
  • Won MACCC title and National Community College Football Championship in 2020
  • Played in 23 games on the offensive line for Northwest Mississippi
  • Two-time All-Region 2-6A selection at Clinton H.S. 
  • Also competed for the Clinton track and field team
Wells on McLaurin: "Jakobe played on a really good offensive line that helped Northwest Mississippi make the semifinals. He's a big and explosive inside player and we're really excited about him."


Albert Nunes | OLB | 6-2 | 205 | Fort Myers, Fla./Garden City CC
  • Registered 31 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and two interceptions for the Broncbusters in 2022
  • Prepped at Dunbar H.S.
  • Member of Dunbar track and field team
Wells on Nunes: "Albert is a big, long outside linebacker from Garden City. He's athletic, long, and explosive."


Bryce Tapp | NG | 6-3 | 310 | Henderson, Ky./Henderson County
  • Led Henderson County to KHSAA Class 6A quarterfinals
  • Three-year starter for the Colonels
  • Played on both offensive and defensive lines for Henderson County
Wells on Tapp: "Bryce came to our camps and did a great job. He's a big, long, athletic kid who we're going to play at nose guard. He a great young man and a tireless worker."
 

Brody Wells | OLB | 6-2 | 205 | Corbin, Ky./Corbin
  • Led Corbin to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and 2022 KHSAA Class 4A state championship game appearance
  • Played linebacker and wide receiver for the Redhounds
  • Returned an interception for a touchdown in KHSAA Class 4A semifinals
  • Also a member of the basketball team
Wells on Wells: "Brody's had a great career at Corbin High School where he got to play for the state championship this year. He's a very athletic player, both in football and basketball. We're excited to see what he brings to our outside linebacker position."
