EKU Fights Back From 5-0 Ninth Inning Deficit For Seventh Straight Win

Box Score

The teams will not play on Saturday.  A doubleheader is now scheduled for Sunday starting at 2 p.m. ET.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. –
With snow falling, Eastern Kentucky overcame a 5-0 deficit in the ninth inning to beat Austin Peay, 7-5, in the series opener on Friday.

It was the Colonels' (10-5) seventh straight win.

Trailing 5-3 with the bases loaded and no outs, Logan Thomason tied the game with a 2-run single to left field.  After a line out and a walk loaded the bases again, Sebastian Greico drew a walk to force in the go ahead run.  Conner Davis followed with a sacrifice fly to complete the 7-run ninth inning.

Closer Will Brian came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth and retired APSU in order for his fifth save of the season.

The comeback started with Greico's lead-off double to begin the ninth.  Davis kept it going with a single through the left side.  Ron Franklin Jr. doubled to left center to bring in the first two runs of the game for Eastern Kentucky.  Jalen Jones singled and Max Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Kendal Ewell drew a walk to make it 5-3 and set up Thomason's game-tying hit.

Franklin finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Davis went 2-for-4, scored a run, drove in a run and made a tremendous diving stab on a hard hit ball down the third base line.  Thomason's only hit in four at bats was the one that tied the game.

EKU starter Michael Schuler pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and walking four while striking out three.  APSU starter Harley Gollert spun seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out eight.

With two outs and runners on the corners in the bottom of the sixth, Harrison Brown singled through the left side for Austin Peay to plate the first run of the game.  A throwing error on a ground ball allowed two more runs to come home to cap the 3-run inning.  The Govs (6-9) added two more in the seventh.

Michael Robinson finished 2-for-2 with a run scored for APSU.

Bryce Travis (1-1) earned the win after pitching one and one-third innings of scoreless relief in the seventh and eighth.  He did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out two.
