VALDOSTA, Ga. – Maddie Hensley led Eastern Kentucky with an even-par round of 72 on the first day of the ASUN Conference Championship Sunday.
 
As a team, EKU opened play with a round of 294 (+6) and is tied for third with Lipscomb (294).  North Florida (283), ranked 48th in the nation, has the lead at 5-under.  Kennesaw State (286) is second at 2-under.
 
The three-day, 54-hole championship is being contested on the par 72, 6,213-yard course at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
 
Hensley torched the final nine holes to the tune of 2-under.  The junior made the turn at 2-over and had two bogeys and a birdie on the first three holes of the back nine.  She then shot par on three straight before finishing with three straight birdies, including a two on the par-3 No. 17 hole.  She is tied for eighth after round one.
 
Eastern Kentucky played the back nine well as a team.  The Colonels reached the midway point at 8-over before carding eight birdies, and just four bogeys, over the final nine holes. 
 
Elisa Orduna Shackleton mixed one birdie with eight pars on the back nine and finished 1-over for the round  (73).  She is tied for 11th overall.
 
Ragnhildur Kristinsdottir shot an opening round 2-over 74 and is tied for 15th.  Rylea Marcum (75) and Vilma Efraimsson (75) are tied for 21st after shooting 3-over.  Efraimsson was 6-over after the first eight holes and then proceeded to register three birdies over the final 10.
 
EKU and Lipscomb have a three shot lead over fifth place Jacksonville State (297).  Central Arkansas (300) is sixth and Florida Gulf Coast (303) is seventh.  Jacksonville (306), Stetson (319), Bellarmine (321) and North Alabama (326) rounded out the field of 11 teams.
 
The second round of the 2022 ASUN Championship will begin at 9 a.m. ET on Monday.  The Colonels will begin teeing off at 9:45 a.m. ET.
