DELAND, Fla. – After dropping an offensive shootout on Thursday, five Colonels score in double-figures to power EKU over Stetson by a score of 83-70 on Saturday afternoon inside J. Ollie Edmunds Center.
With the win, the Colonels move to 13-9 (6-3, ASUN) and return home for tough clashes against Austin Peay and Lipscomb next week.
Antwainette Walker led EKU with 17 points on 6-of-8 (.750) shooting for her 20
th consecutive game scoring double-digits. The redshirt senior added a team leading eight rebounds and five steals in the win.
Kalissa Lacy and
Alice Recanati notched 16 points each in the barrage of scoring, combining 6-of-12 from beyond the arch. Lacy knocked down a team-leading four 3-pointers, one shy of tying her career-high total.
Marissa Mackins and
Danielle Rainey combined for 26 points, each scoring 13 points apiece. Mackins tallied six rebounds in the contest, her second highest value of the season.
EKU extended its lead to 11-6 off a jumper by Recanati, a made three from Rainey, and a basket by
Emma Hacker. Stetson would charge back, scoring three consecutive baskets to take a one-point lead at 12-11. Lacy salvaged the quarter after converting an and-one to knot the match at 17 all. EKU and Stetson traded baskets to end the frame, the Hatters claimed the first quarter at 23-20 off a Jaelyn Talley layup with 21 ticks remaining.
Made baskets by Walker and Hacker kicked off the second frame for the Colonels with the 24-23 advantage. The boxing match continued for the duration of the quarter until EKU went on an eight-point swing from a basket by Walker and made threes from Lacy and Rainey. Stetson remained in the contest hitting two shots and a pair of free throws to close out the first half in EKU's favor 42-38.
Both teams traded makes from beyond the arch to start the second half, EKU failed to convert a shot from the eight-minute mark to less than one-minute left in the quarter. However, EKU went to the free throw line 14 times, sinking 11 of them. Another three from Recanati with four seconds left sealed the third frame with a six-point 63-57 lead.
The Colonels held Stetson scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, baskets by Recanati, Walker, and Mackins extended a 13-point lead, EKU's largest of the contest. EKU and Stetson traded baskets in the final half of the frame, holding the Hatters at a 10-point deficit to secure the first ASUN road win of the season and a regular season sweep of SU.
EKU turned in splits of 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent from deep, and 85 percent from the charity stripe. Knocking down 12 three pointers and going 17-of-20 from the free throw line.
The Colonels outrebounded SU 29-22.
Stetson, who has now dropped four of its last five ASUN contests, outshot the Colonels shooting 51 percent from the floor.
EKU returns to action next week hosting Lipscomb on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 5:00 p.m. ET and will renew an old conference rivalry against Austin Peay on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
The Colonels are hosting two promotional events next week, as Thursday's contest is the celebration National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Alumni Coliseum, presented by Anthem. Saturday's game with APSU is "We Salute Her" Game. Tickets for both games start as low as $5 on the Colonels' website.
