RICHMOND, Ky. – Behind a 52 percent from the floor in the third quarter and three made 3-pointers, Lipscomb overpowers EKU by a score of 74-65 on Thursday night inside Baptist Health Arena.
With the loss, EKU drops to 13-10 (6-4 ASUN) on the season and snapped a 10-game home winning streak, its longest since 2004-05.
Antwainette Walker, who was tabbed to the 2023 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Mid-Season Top 10 List on Tuesday by the National Basketball Hall of Fame and the WBCA, led the Colonels with 18 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
Alice Recanati followed the team-leading performance with 16 points of her own, shooting 6-of-10 (.600) from the floor. Recanati knocked down two 3-pointers, tying her season high for the third time this year.
Danielle Rainey kicked off Thursday's contest for EKU with a made 3-pointer, followed by a Walker jumper to knot the scoring at five all. After going scoreless for two two-minute periods, EKU pushed a five-point swing after the media timeout to take a 12-8 lead. The Colonels ended the first period on a 12-8 run for a 18-16 advantage heading into the second quarter.
A made three gave Lipscomb a one-point lead out of the pause. Free throws from
Emma Hacker and an and-one from Walker gave EKU its largest lead of the first half at five with the score 23-19. A four-point swing off baskets from Recanati and Walker stopped the Bisons advance. Walker ended the first half leading the Colonels with 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Lipscomb shot 52 percent from the floor and 100 percent from the charity stripe in the third quarter, including three made 3-pointers to outscore EKU 29-14. The Bisons extended their largest lead of the game (14) to end the frame at 58-45.
EKU went on a 5-0 run to begin the fourth quarter and reduce the Lipscomb lead to seven. Back-to-back possessions with made threes for Lipscomb once again pushed its tally to 14, a layup from
Kayra Freeman stopped the bleeding for EKU. The Colonels and Bisons scored nine points apiece to end the game, however, Lipscomb walked away with the 74-65 win.
Lipscomb narrowly outshot the Colonels shooting 40.6 percent from the floor and 32.4 percent from beyond the arch. The Bisons widely outrebounded EKU by 44-31.
EKU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4:30 p.m. ET against Austin Peay, renewing an old conference rivalry in a new league for the first time since Feb. 22, 2021.
