Colonels Offense Shines in Nil-Nil Draw Against Jacksonville

EKU Honored 10-Member Senior Class

RICHMOND, Ky. – Despite a season-high 28 shots and 10 corner attempts, the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team plays Jacksonville to a nil-nil result on Sunday afternoon at the EKU Soccer Field.

With the draw, EKU (4-6-3, 3-1-2 ASUN) picks up its 11th consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference point in its last five fixtures. EKU remains in fourth place in the conference table with five games remaining.

The Colonels attempted a season-high 28 shots in Sunday's contest, their most since Oct. 2, 2018, in a 4-3 win over Morehead State. EKU outshot Jacksonville (2-8-2, 0-5-1 ASUN) by a lopsided 21 shots, seven shots on target, and 10 corner attempts.

Maia Ransom was the highlight on Senior Day attempting a career-high seven shots with a penalty kick attempt in the 30th minute that was saved by the Dolphins' keeper. Ransom's seven shots were the most by an EKU student-athlete this season.

Ciana Miller and Nerea de Diego also attempted a career-high four shots in the tie. Senior Kylie Fitzgerald also had three shots, her second-most this season.

EKU opened Sunday's match by controlling the pace and breaking through the JU backline, setting up a back-and-forth affair and outshooting the opposition 7-3 in the first 15 minutes. Allison Vaughn and Ransom had one shot on frame in the period, both saved by JU's defender-turned-keeper Logan Gonzales.

Ransom was fouled in the box due to unsporting conduct by the Dolphins' backline, establishing an opportunity for EKU to take advantage in the 30th minute. Ransom sent the ball down the middle which Gonzales corralled to stop the Colonels' chance.

Paula Herranz neared a goal in the 43rd, sending a ball to the upper-right side of the frame that was saved by Gonzales, her fourth of the half. Both teams entered the pause at nil despite EKU controlling 65 percent of the possession.

Jacksonville flipped its formation twice out of the break and applied constant pressure on EKU, forward Anaya Black attempted a shot in the 56th minute, which was saved by Melanie McKeown.

In the final 34 minutes of play, EKU attempted 13 shots and six corners and held its opposition to zeros across the board to end the standoff in a nil-nil result.

A total of 21 student-athletes saw action in Sunday's contest and 13 players attempted at least one or more shots.

McKeown earned her second career shutout in the result. She's up to 10 saves on the season in two appearances.

EKU returns next week facing North Alabama (Oct. 5) and Central Arkansas (Oct. 8) on the road. Last season, the Colonels gained four points against the ASUN Conference travel partners in Richmond. Both matchups are set to be streamed on ESPN+.
