Women’s Basketball Downs Simmons 94-38, Moves to 4-0 at Home

Brie Crittendon and Althea Kara Angeles Set Career-High Points

RICHMOND, Ky. – Behind two career-high point performances from Brie Crittendon and Althea Kara Angeles, Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball defeats Simmons College of Kentucky by a lopsided 94-38 score on Monday night at Baptist Health Arena.

With the win, EKU moves to 4-0 at home and 7-1 on the season, its best start to a season since 1976.  In three seasons of the Greg Todd era, the Colonels have a 26-8 (.764) record at home as Todd becomes the quickest head coach in program history to record 40 wins.

Angeles led the Colonels with a career-high 19 points on 9-of-16 shooting.  Crittendon followed suit with her own career-high 18-point performance going 6-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from deep.  Her four threes tied the team's most made three-pointers by a student-athlete this season.

Ivy Turner (13), Raphaela Toussaint (13), and Alice Recanati (10) were the other three Colonels who ended in double-figure scoring at the final tally.

Forward Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor brought down a team-leading and career-high 10 rebounds to help EKU outrebound Simmons 49 to 29.  Toussaint (9) and Sierra McCullough (7) were the other two Colonels who neared double figure rebounding in the affair.

EKU jumped out to a double-digit 15-4 run to open Monday's contest, led by two buckets from Turner and Toussaint.  Three consecutive trips that ended in a made layup and two three-pointers from Crittendon and Angeles ended the first frame with a 29-11, Colonel lead.

A Recanati made floater from 10 feet out extended EKU's lead to 26 just moments before the final media timeout of the first half.  The Colonels would go on a nine-point run to create a lopsided 51-16 (+35) score just one minute prior to halftime.

Crittendon, a Union, Ky. native, knocked down a three to open the second half which pushed her over her previous career points value.  McGinnis-Taylor and Angeles made two baskets in the final ticks of the quarter to keep the Colonels 48 points ahead of the Falcons entering the final 10 minutes of play.

Despite a back-and-forth affair to begin the fourth quarter, a made breakaway layup by Toussaint pushed EKU's lead to 50 with seven minutes remaining and the team never failed to relinquish its superiority over the in-state NCCAA foe.  EKU ended the fourth quarter on a 14-2 run which ended the game with a 94-38 lead in the home team's favor.

EKU recorded its highest field goal percentage of the season, shooting 38-of-69 (.551) and out assisted Simmons 22-9.  The Colonels reached a largest lead of 60 points in Monday's game, which they kept for over one minute and 30 seconds.

The Colonels outscored Simmons 23-0 off fastbreaks, 58-16 in the paint, and 34-9 off the bench.

EKU preps for a short turnaround hosting Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at noon EST back at Baptist Health Arena.  Fans are encouraged to arrive early to find general admission seating as Wednesday's game is "Education Day" at Alumni Coliseum.
