Colonels Shutout South Alabama In Game One, Fall In Game Two

Game 1 Box Score  |  Game 2 Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. –
Three Eastern Kentucky University pitchers combined for a 2-0 shutout of South Alabama in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday.  The Jaguars took game two 26-6.

In the first game, the Colonels grabbed an early 1-0 lead.  With one out in the top of the first, Logan Thomason singled up the middle.  Will King and Ron Franklin Jr. followed with walks.  Charlie Ludwick drew a third straight to force in the first run of the game.

Thomason's two-out infield single plated Roderick Criss II for a 2-0 lead in the sixth.

Rese Brown pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out nine on 77 pitches.  Freshman Chase Alderman pitched two scoreless innings of relief in his collegiate debut.  Joe Clancy faced the minimum in the ninth to earn the save.

Miguel Larreal was 3-for-4 for the Colonels.  Ludwick also had three hits and an RBI.  Thomason finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

South Alabama starter Garfield Johns didn't allow a run and struck out eight in the first four innings of game two as the Jaguars built a 5-0 lead .

JG Bell drove in two with a single through the right side in the bottom of the second.  Erick Orbeta's double to left in the fourth made it 4-0.  Mitchell Heer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the fourth for a 5-0 USA lead.

After striking out the first batter of the fifth, Johns ran into some trouble.  Three straight singles brought in the first run for the Colonels.  Criss's base knock to center scored Max Williams from second.

That's as close as EKU (2-1) would get.  South Alabama scored six in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull away.  King's 3-run home run in the top of the seventh drew the Colonels to within 15-5.

Will Turner went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and five RBIs for the Jaguars (2-1).

EKU will close out play at the Jaguar Classic on Sunday against Northwestern State at 12 p.m. ET.
