Colonels Can't Hold Off Bellarmine Comeback In Series Opener

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University scored four runs in the third to take a one-run lead, but couldn't hold off Bellarmine's comeback in a 6-5 loss on Friday in the ASUN Conference series opener at Earle Combs Stadium.

After the Knights took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, the Colonels staged a comeback in the bottom half of the inning.  Ron Franklin Jr. started the frame with a home run over the wall in right center.  Two batter later, Max Williams drove in a run with a double to right center.  Miguel Larreal brought home Williams with a single up the middle.  Later in the inning, Will King's ground out was good enough to bring in the go-ahead run.

Davis Crane's home run in the fourth tied the score for Bellarmine.  Reed Blaszczyk and Casey Sorg hit back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth to put the visitors ahead 6-4.

EKU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but was only able to push across one run.

Williams went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Colonels (7-10, 0-1 ASUN).  Larreal also had two hits in four at bats, scored a run and drove in one.  Blaszczyk was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs for Bellarmine (6-12, 1-0 ASUN).

Game two of the series will be Saturday at 2 p.m.  Saturday is the first EKU trading card giveaway of the season.
