Colonels Fall in ASUN Tournament Quarterfinals to Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University's ASUN Conference Championship hopes came to an end with a 73-55 loss to No. 4 seeded Austin Peay in the quarterfinals on Sunday night in the Winfield Dunn Center.

EKU's fifth-place predicted finish in the ASUN Coaches Pre-Season Poll came to fruition on Sunday night, the loss marks consecutive seasons with an appearance in the quarterfinals for the Colonels.

Antwainette Walker ended up leading EKU with 18 points and six rebounds after being held to single digits in the first half, her 30th game in double-figure scoring on the season.

Alice Recanati ended the night with 11 points, notching 10-or-more points in four of her last six games.

The Govs jumped EKU early, extending their lead to double digits in the first eight minutes of the contest. EKU ended the first quarter on a 9-5 run to narrow the gap to 20-14.

EKU would keep the deficit around 10 points through the second frame, APSU would go on a run to extend its largest lead of the first half to 18 to end the quarter, 40-22.

The Colonels' third quarter shooting woes allowed Austin Peay to keep its double-digit lead for the whole third quarter. EKU shot 4-of-11 from the floor to end the third 10-minute period.

EKU failed to score in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, allowing APSU to extend its lead to 20 points. With around six minutes left on the clock, EKU head coach Greg Todd switched to a press defense which forced six-consecutive APSU turnovers, bringing the Colonels back to 10 points.

Despite the added effort, EKU was unable to break the double-digit deficit as Austin Peay extended its lead back out to 15+ to end the Colonels' tournament hopes, 77-53.

EKU ends its regular season and conference postseason action with 18 wins, the most wins in over seven years.

In two seasons at the helm of the program, Todd has doubled EKU's win totals from nine in 2020-21 and made the conference tournament quarterfinals in consecutive seasons. EKU has a 22-8 home record under Todd, as he will enter next season five wins shy of 300 in his career.
