Will King was drafted by the Atlanta Braves and left-hander Bradley Stewart was chosen by the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. The Colonels have had players taken in each of the last two Major League Baseball Drafts and a total of nine players picked in the last nine drafts.
King was the 609th pick overall and the 25th selection in the 20th round. Stewart, a freshman from Fort Lauderdale, Florida who signed with EKU in the spring, was the 500th overall pick and the sixth selection of the 17th round.
Stewart was the third lefty hurler picked by the Tigers. King was the 37th catcher chosen in this year's draft and the only catcher drafted by the Braves.
Following his junior season this past spring King was an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Midwest All-Region Second Team selection. He was also a second team All-ASUN Conference pick, and on the watch lists for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year and Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Awards.
King has played 21 games in the Cape Cod League this summer and is hitting .354 with seven runs, one home run and 16 RBIs.
The New York, New York native led the Colonels with a .346 batting average this past season. He had 13 doubles, 12 home runs, 47 RBIs and 47 runs scored despite missing a portion of the season with an injury. He posted a .626 slugging percentage and a .427 on-base percentage.
King was eighth in the ASUN in batting average and 13th in slugging. He tied for first among all ASUN catchers (minimum 15 stolen bases attempted against), throwing out 41.2 percent of the runners who attempted to steal. He was also chosen to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team.
As a sophomore in 2022, King was a first team All-ASUN catcher and ASUN All-Tournament Team selection. He batted .313 with 19 doubles, 11 home runs, 60 RBIs and 31 runs to go along with a .553 slugging percentage and a .393 on-base percentage. He walked 24 times and struck out only 21 times in 217 at bats.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Stewart was a FACA All-Star as a senior in 2023 at Cooper City High School. He struck out 15 and walked only two in five innings on the mound his senior season. He was a first team Perfect Game All-American as a junior, striking out 13 in eight and one-third innings for the Cowboys.
Stewart was a first team All-Sun Sentinel and HSBN All-Star as a sophomore in 2021 after striking out 48 in 27 and two-thirds innings with a 3.04 ERA.
