Colonels Play to a Scoreless Draw at Queens

Fourth Conference Point This Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – EKU soccer (2-6-2, 1-1-1 ASUN) picked up its fourth point towards the Atlantic Sun Conference standings after playing to a nil draw against Queens on Thursday night at the Queens Soccer Complex.

The Colonels outshot Queens (2-4-3, 0-1-2 ASUN) by a lopsided 14-6 and 6-2 in shots on target. Junior forward Jami Anderson attempted a career-high six shot attempts and landed three on frame. Her shot values against Queens were the most by an EKU student-athlete in a single match this season.

Maia Ransom and Nerea de Diego were EKU's other multi-shot performers, attempting two shots and one on target.

Queens opened Thursday's contest with two shots on target in the opening 10 minutes of play, both saved by Marah Krick, who earned her second clean sheet of the year. Shots by de Diego, Ransom, and Anderson around the 20th minute mark flipped the pace towards EKU's favor and sparked an offensive frenzy for the visiting squad.

Freshman Rachel Robinson and Ransom, who entered the pitch as substitutes, struck shots on frame near the 25th minute. Another shot in the 43rd by fellow first year Erica Cox sent both teams to the break at a nil standoff. EKU outshot Queens 6-3 in the first half.

A controversial play began the second half, as EKU's Anderson used her heel to strike a loose ball in the box that crossed over the goal line, a Queens defender send the ball out of play to negate the Colonel goal.

Anderson would attempt EKU's next four shots, two on frame, keeping pressure on the Queens' back line.

The Colonels' next opportunity came late in the match as senior Katie Wall fired a shot near the right upper 90 that was saved by QUC's Erica Turner – who led the contest with four saves for her third clean sheet.

Shots off frame by Anderson and de Diego finalized Thursday's contest at a nil-nil result to earn EKU's fourth ASUN point in three matches.

On top of EKU's lopsided shot (14-6) and shot on frame (6-2) advantage, EKU led the contest in overall possession at 56 percent.

The Colonels continue their road trip with a match against Kennesaw State at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 24 beginning at 1 p.m. on ESPN+. EKU is seeking its second straight win over KSU after eliminating the Owls in the ASUN quarterfinals by a score of 1-0 last season.
