Colonels Offense Explodes for Three Goals at Kennesaw State

Seven Points in Three ASUN Games

KENNESAW, Ga. – After falling to a one-goal deficit early in the first half, EKU scored three unanswered goals to gain its seventh consecutive conference point with a 3-1 win over Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

With Sunday's win, the Colonels (3-6-2, 2-1-1 ASUN) have gained a result in their last three matches to move to fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference with seven points.

EKU had a season-high 10 points in the win over KSU that consisted of three goals and four assists for it's single game high during the 2023 campaign.

Maia Ransom, Chiara Premoli, and Gretta Gunn found the back of the net for the first time this season, through 11 matches, EKU's nine goals have been scored by eight different student-athletes.

Two of EKU's three goals were assisted by two student-athletes, including first-time assist recorders Kaia Griffin and Sophie MacAlpine. Gretta Gunn pushed her program-leading assist total to 12 in the win and Kaitlyn Rowlett notched the second assist of her two-year career in Richmond.

Seniors Lydia Jervier and Ransom led the EKU attack, both attempting two-or-more shots in Sunday's win.

Kennesaw opened the match with a goal in the 17th minute from forward Tianna Rivera. The Colonels flipped the pressure with a few key subs and for the next 17 minutes attempted four shots to KSU's zero.

EKU found its equalizer in the 37th minute by Ransom, who caught a cross from Griffin that was pushed to the center of the box, flicked on by Gunn to find the back of the net.

Just seven minutes out of the locker room, EKU found its eventual game-winner from freshman winger Premoli, who caught two one-touch passes from Rowlett and MacAlpine off the set-piece to head in her first collegiate goal.

Gunn capitalized on Kennesaw State's mistake on the attacking third and drove 25 yards uncontested to strike a ball past the running KSU keeper Allanah Blye for the two-goal lead. Her goal in the 64th minute was the first of the 2023 season for the West Chester, Ohio product and her first since last season in the ASUN Tournament semifinals against Liberty. In three seasons at EKU, Gunn has recorded five goals and 12 assists for a total of 22 career points.

In the final 26 minutes of play, EKU held KSU to two shots, both off target, to keep the score at 3-1 in the visiting team's favor and secured the second win in ASUN play.

EKU outshot Kennesaw State 10-9 overall and 4-1 in shots on target, its third consecutive match outshooting conference opponents. With four corners in Sunday's win over KSU, EKU has been awarded 18 corners in its last three matches – 13 more than its opposition.

The Colonels return to action on Thursday hosting North Florida at the EKU Soccer Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and fans are encouraged to arrive early to participate in Campus Recreation Day festivities beginning an hour prior to kickoff. As a reminder, admission is free to the EKU Soccer Field for the duration of the 2023 season – including EKU's four remaining ASUN home competitions.
