EKU Soccer Falls to Northern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team (1-4-1) fell on the wrong end of a 2-0 result to Northern Kentucky (2-1-3) on Thursday evening at the EKU Soccer Field.

Offensively the Colonels were led by Kylie Fitzgerald and Nerea de Diego, who recorded EKU's only two shots on goal. Northern Kentucky native Kaia Griffin and sophomore Gretta Gunn had a team-leading two shot attempts in the match.

On the defensive side, Kaitlyn Rowlett and Ciana Miller both logged 90 minutes of action on the backline.

NKU scored its opening goal in the 29th minute as forward Sofia Wilmes took the cross from Meghan Belrose and used her head to find the back of the net. The Norse ended the half with an additional four shots and two corners before the horn sounded.

NKU Lilly Yordy scored an olympic goal in the 68th minute to pad the lead to two.

The Colonels attempted to find an answer as de Diego struck her first shot on goal of the 2023 campaign that was saved bottom right by Mickayla Kowalski, who left Thursday's match with two saves and a clean sheet.

Northern Kentucky ended the match with the lead in shot (10-8), shots on goal (5-2), and corners (8-3).

EKU returns to action on Sunday on the road against Miami (Ohio) at Bobby Kramig Field to conclude the regular season.
