RICHMOND, Ky. – On a snowy night in Richmond, the Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team overcame adversity to win the ASUN Game of the Week over Central Arkansas, 65-58, on Thursday night at Baptist Health Arena.
With the win, EKU (13-5, 2-2 ASUN) has won nine straight games at home dating back to last season. Under head coach
Greg Todd's tutelage, EKU has a 27-8 (.771) record inside the Coliseum since 2021.
Highlighting the Colonels' effort was guard
Alice Recanati, who became the 25th player in program history to record 1,000 career points. The Bergamo, Italy native ended Thursday's game with 16 points, four assists, and one rebound.
Antwainette Walker led all scorers with 19 points while
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor and
Ivy Turner followed suit with 11 points apiece. McGinnis-Taylor recorded the second double-double of the season with a career-high 11 rebounds in the win.
EKU's win marked the 700th of Todd's career in the college and high school ranks. Todd began his coaching career in 1992 with Berea Community in his hometown. Earlier this season he reached 300 career wins at the NCAA DI level in a neutral site victory over UAB.
Central Arkansas (11-6, 3-1 ASUN) controlled the first half extending its lead to 10 points with 5:41 left on the clock in the second quarter. A four-point swing from Walker closed the first 20 minutes of play with a 29-24, Sugar Bear lead.
Three straight possessions with a made basket from Turner, McGinnis-Taylor, and a three from Recanati would narrow EKU's deficit to just two points with 4:18 on the clock in the third quarter. Redshirt-Sophomore
Brie Crittendon scored on the final two possessions of the quarter knotting the game at 45 heading to the fourth.
Turner capitalized on an offensive rebound, putting it back up to take a two-point advantage to open the final period of regulation. Four free throws, two made jumpers from Recanati, and a second chance layup from McGinnis-Taylor would push EKU's largest lead of the game to 10 with 1:45 left of play. The Colonels allowed a UCA three-pointer from Jade Upshaw, who led the Sugar Bears with 15 points, to cut it to seven, but would hold on in the final 26 second to claim their second straight conference win.
UCA's Randrea Wright followed Upshaw with 13 points going 60 percent from the floor. Forward Bree Stephens led the visitors with nine rebounds, all of which coming on the defensive side of the court.
Despite shooting a cool 29 percent in the first half, EKU stormed back to go 40 percent over the game. EKU is now 8-1 on the season when shooting 40 percent or better.
EKU and UCA tied in made field goals (25) and total rebounds (37). The Sugar Bears outshot EKU from the floor (.446) and free throw line (.625).
