Colonels Break Cougars' Heart On Valentine's Day

RICHMOND, Ky. –
A 17-1 first half run fueled Eastern Kentucky University's, 86-73, non-conference victory over Chicago State on Wednesday at Baptist Health Arena.
 
The Colonels (14-11) had a 2-point edge when Tayshawn Comer hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game-changing run.  Comer added four more points before John Ukomadu's two free throws and lay-up capped it off.  The senior's basket made it 39-21 with 5:33 to go before halftime. 
 
Chicago State's only point between the 10:37 and 4:24 marks was a free throw by Jahsean Corbett.
 
EKU led by 19 at the break, 52-33, after shooting 66 percent in the first 20 minutes.
 
The Colonels scored five of the first seven points to start the second half.  Comer's first free throw pushed the margin to 20 for the first time, 55-35.  Michael Moreno putback Comer's second free throw attempt for a 22-point lead with 18 minutes to go in the game.
 
The Cougars (11-18) got as close as 10 with less than 1:30 left.
 
Isaiah Cozart led EKU with 19 points and nine rebounds.  Leland Walker added 14 points and five assists.  Comer finished with 13 points.  Ukomadu had 10 points and five rebounds.
 
Wesley Cardet Jr. and Camer Jernigan had 16 points each for Chicago State.  Jernigan grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds.
 
EKU shot 53 percent from the field for the game and out-rebounded the Cougars by five, 37-32.  CSU forced 14 turnovers off 11 steals.
 
The Colonels get back into Atlantic Sun Conference action on Saturday at Bellarmine.  Tip-off in Louisville is scheduled for 7 p.m.
