FLORENCE, Ala. – Behind
Antwainette Walker's 16th career double-double, the Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team dominates North Alabama by a score of 84-57 on Thursday night inside CB&S Bank Arena.
With the win, EKU moves to 19-7 overall and 8-5 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. EKU also clinches its third consecutive trip to the ASUN Championship in the win.
The Colonels were led by graduate
Antwainette Walker, who recorded a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double. Her 55th career game scoring in double figures and her 16th career double-double.
Following Walker, EKU's
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor (16),
Alice Recanati (14), and
Kaitlyn Costner (12) found themselves in double figures. The Colonels played without four scholarship players due to injury.
EKU's 84 points was its second largest point total against a conference opponent this season. The Colonels have scored 80 or more points in two of their last three games.
Thursday's win marks EKU's third straight inside league play, the Colonels have won eight of their last 10 games.
After EKU won the tip, both teams battled to an 8-8 draw nearing the first media timeout, the stalemate was broken by Recanati, who's made floater helped the Colonels push an 8-5 run. Walker ended the period with consecutive made layups to end the frame 22-18, EKU.
The Colonels controlled the second quarter, holding UNA to just one point for over seven minutes and 30 seconds, while padding a 16-point, 35-19 lead. Recanati nailed a jumped to take EKU to the locker room up 37-23.
A made three-pointer from
Brie Crittendon took EKU to a 50-30 lead over the Lions in the third quarter. The Colonels would push their lead to 30 to end the frame 64-34.
EKU would extend its 32-point largest lead of the game twice in the fourth quarter, while getting nine points in the paint from McGinnis-Taylor. The Colonels would hold off to win the game 84-57 to clinch its berth in the conference championship in March.
EKU dominated the hustle stats, beating UNA in rebounds (44-35) and points in the paint (54-20). The Colonels shot 50.8 percent from the floor, marking their fourth straight game shooting 45 percent or better and 14-2 on the season when shooting over 40 percent.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday facing Central Arkansas at 2 p.m. EST inside the Farris Center. EKU will be seeking its 20th win for the first time since 2005.
